In one of my previous posts, I presented the gearbox I’d rebuilt over the last summer. It took me quite a while to finish this project and one of the reasons was that I had to invest some time to get all my questions answered. The book How to Rebuild and Modify Your Manual Transmission, written by Robert Bowen, proved to be a profound source of information in this context.
It was the first time I did a gearbox, and as an engineer I was obviously supposed to know what a gearbox does, but apparently I had no real idea how its internals would look like. The first thing Robert Bowen does is to present all the generic parts of a gearbox. They are presented in large-sized, colored photographs and the individual function is explained in the corresponding paragraphs.
The first part of How To Rebuild and Modify Your Manual Transmission gives you an idea what the factory repair manual for your gearbox is actually talking about. If your fingers aren’t all thumbs, it isn’t a big deal to disassemble and reassemble a gearbox. After I did one, a point I totally agree on with Robert Bowen. However, what is the difficult matter is to identify which parts are still fine and which parts need to be replaced. The second part of How To Rebuild and Modify Your Manual Transmission deals exactly with this question. A lot of colored photographs are used to show you how worn internals look like and what characterizes intact parts.
This is something you’ll hardly find an answer with a Google search. I spent days searching the web and reading forum posts, but mostly you find just ten people to present eleven opinions. If you’re not an old hand in the gearbox business that is able to separate the men from the boys, this won’t help you at all, but just leads to more confusion. Believe me or not, How To Rebuild and Modify Your Manual Transmission will save you a lot of time.
In addition, Robert Bowen presents the nuts and bolts of transmission rebuilds, gives some advices for problem diagnosis, briefly discusses race modifications, and finally presents two example rebuilds. How To Rebuild and Modify Your Manual Transmission is a veritable source of information for every hobbyist who wants to do a gearbox rebuild.
